Towards IPOS Info Day - Unveiling the Strategic Overview
The team presented the Strategic Overview for Towards IPOS, a culmination of two years of preparatory work and a comprehensive three-month global consultation. Drawing from invaluable feedback from experts worldwide, the Towards IPOS Consortium has designed a platform tailored to empower decision-makers in bridging the gap between political commitments and tangible actions, by providing unparalleled access to the best ocean knowledge.
We addressed the following key questions:
Why: Tackling the implementation gap in achieving ocean-related international targets.
What: The three core services propelling IPOS forward.
How: Details on hosting, governance structure, and projected budget.
Support: The momentum of political, scientific, and societal backing.
Next Steps: Our roadmap towards the official IPOS launch.
Inclusivity of diverse knowledge lies at the core of IPOS’s mission, a goal that is simple to express but challenging to realize. As we work toward establishing IPOS, we are building connections with ocean practitioners to explore pathways for meaningful collaboration on targeted projects.
IPOS, alongside Swedbio, the ICCA Consortium, Fundación Quantum, and the Universidad de Magdalena, supported a session on capacity building for small-scale fisheries (SSF) in Cali, Colombia, hosted by CoopeSoliDar R.L. Representatives from SSF movements across Latin America gathered to discuss human rights, sustainable practices, and equitable marine conservation. The session prepared SSF leaders for COP16, emphasizing unity, advocacy, and the recognition of traditional knowledge in policy making. This collaborative effort aimed to empower SSF voices for impactful participation on an international stage.

Blue Africa Summit: The Tangier Declaration Endorses IPOS for Ocean Sustainability
At the Second Blue Africa Summit in Tangier (Morocco), the Tangier Declaration, adopted under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, brought together over 25 African coastal nations, aiming to strengthen governance, capacity sharing, and sustainable finance.
The declaration endorsed IPOS as a new mechanism to accelerate global ocean conservation efforts (SDG 14, CBD) through clear, science-backed policy solutions. As part of this initiative, IPOS is committed to advancing actionable strategies for inclusive and effective ocean sustainability.

Ocean Dialogues: Towards IPOS: Shaping Ocean Knowledge-Policy Interfaces
The event aimed to gather insights on strengthening Ocean Knowledge-Policy Interfaces (OKPIs) at both national and international levels. By highlighting case studies from Brazil, South Africa, and globally, we intended to inform a Policy Brief on the pathways for enhancing these interfaces within the context of Ocean sustainability.
In early June, the Towards IPOS team attended the CISOS24 Academic Forum and the Immersed In Change high-level political event in Costa Rica.
They presented an initial proposal for the IPOS platform to strengthen the connection between ocean knowledge and decision-making. Highlights included the CISOS24 inauguration presentation, brainstorming with an international group, stakeholder interviews to review the draft TORs, and high-level discussions on IPOS's role in ocean governance. Special thanks to Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, TBA21, and IRD for their support.
